Celebrating Culture and Camaraderie at SME
At SME, culture isn’t just a buzzword, it’s the heartbeat of everything we do. We know that when people feel connected, appreciated, and part of something bigger, they thrive. We knew it at the beginning of SME when we were a team of two and even now as we’ve reached a team of over 130 team members. That’s why we invest in traditions that bring us together, allow us to step away from the computer for a short time, and remind us that work can be fun too!
One of our favorite traditions? The Annual Fall Cornhole Tournament and Food Truck Day at the Cumberland, Maine, office!
Why Culture Matters
A strong company culture is more than perks and parties (although we do like those). It’s about creating an environment where people feel valued, appreciated, and engaged. It’s the glue that holds teams together – during the day-to-day responsibilities and for any project surprises that may pop up. When we take time to connect outside of our daily tasks, we strengthen the relationships that make collaboration smoother and more meaningful.
The Fall Cornhole Tournament
Every fall, the front yard at the SME Cumberland office transforms into a lively arena of friendly competition. The cornhole tournament is a highlight with participants from several different departments, and the teams are drawn at random, so you never know who your tournament partner will be! Whether you’re a seasoned player with a strong technique or playing for the first time, the energy is contagious.
It’s not just about winning (though bragging rights are definitely a thing around here). It’s about coming together, sharing laughs, and building camaraderie that lasts long after the final toss.
Food Truck Fun
And what pairs perfectly with a crisp autumn day and a cornhole tournament? Delicious food! We bring in one of our favorite local food trucks to serve up burgers and fries that fuel the fun and give everyone a chance to relax together.
It’s a small gesture with a big impact — showing our team that we appreciate their hard work and want to make space for celebration.
Other ways we’ve come together: Volunteering for community service, running in SME-sponsored road races, tickets to sporting events, cruises around Casco Bay in Portland, holiday parties, and more!
