Project Challenges
SME was retained by the City of Bath to provide a broad range of geologic and engineering services associated with 1) operation and expansion of the landfill, 2) closure of portions of the landfill, 3) other tasks including the management of leachate control and landfill gas management systems, and 4) ongoing landfill monitoring. SME has been providing landfill services to the City of Bath since 2000.
Project Outcome and Value Added
Technical support, design, permitting and construction phase engineering for the Phase 3, vertical height increase, which involved the construction of a double-lined, piggy-back landfill over an unlined portion of the landfill. The Phase 3 project was completed in 2018. Key features of the innovative Phase 3 Landfill Expansion Project included: 1) a 4- acre, doubled-lined, landfill cell, 2) a leachate collection/storage sump located beneath the Phase 3 cell, 3) modifications to the leachate collection and pumping system, which transports over 10 million gallons of leachate a year to the City sewer system, 4) modifications to the landfill gas collection and flaring system, to improve operation and gas collection efficiency.
The innovative Phase 3 landfill project provided several significant benefits to the City: 1) increased landfill capacity by over 200,000 cubic yards, which provided the City with five to seven more years of capacity than had been anticipated, 2) reduced the per ton cost of waste disposal and 3) provided the City more time to contribute funds to the landfill closure fund.
Technical support, design, permitting, and construction phase engineering for the placement of intermediate and final cover systems for over 4.5 acres of the landfill.
Technical support to the City, associated with discussions with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MEDEP) regarding landfill leachate management systems and the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) for the landfill.
Annual landfill operations support, implementation of the water quality monitoring program, and preparation of annual water quality reports for the landfill.
